How Much Does a Kitchen Remodel Cost in Boulder County in 2026?
Most kitchen remodels in Boulder County cost between $35,000 and $85,000. A simple refresh can come in around $15,000, and a full redesign with a new layout can pass $150,000. Where your project lands depends on three decisions: whether the layout changes, which cabinets you choose, and how much of the room you open up.
We're Contreras Builds, a residential general contractor based in Louisville. Here's how we explain kitchen pricing to homeowners in Louisville, Lafayette, Superior, Boulder, Erie and Longmont.
Kitchen remodel costs by project level (2026 planning ranges):
Refresh, $15,000 to $35,000: paint, new counters and backsplash, hardware, lighting, sink and faucet. Cabinets and layout stay.
Mid-range remodel, $35,000 to $85,000: new cabinets, counters, flooring, appliances and lighting in the same layout.
Upscale or new layout, $85,000 to $165,000+: moving walls, plumbing or gas, custom cabinetry and premium appliances.
These are planning numbers, not a quote. They're based on published data: Denver kitchen permits averaged $34,780 in declared value from 2021 to January 2026, and the Colorado average was $50,368 (Block Renovation). Nationally, the 2025 Cost vs. Value report puts a minor kitchen remodel at $28,458, a mid-range major remodel at $82,793 and an upscale one at $164,104 (NerdWallet). Labor and materials in Boulder County usually run above the Denver average.
Where your kitchen budget goes: cabinets are the biggest single line in most kitchens. Then come labor, countertops and appliances, followed by flooring, lighting and finishes. Contractor labor in the Denver area runs about $85 to $100 an hour (Block Renovation).
4 things that push the price up: (1) Moving the sink, range or a wall. Every plumbing, gas, venting or structural change adds labor, inspections and time. (2) Custom cabinets. Semi-custom and custom lines cost more than stock and take longer to arrive. (3) An older home. In houses built before 1980, expect surprises behind the walls, and older wiring may need updating to code. (4) Long lead times. Special-order appliances and stone can leave a project waiting for weeks.
Do you need a permit? Usually, yes. Most kitchen remodels that touch plumbing, electrical, gas or walls need a building permit, and fees are typically based on the project's value. In Louisville, for example, the city's published estimate for a $75,000 project comes to about $3,298 in permit, plan review and use-tax fees, and remodels are fast-tracked with 1 to 2 weeks of review (City of Louisville). Rules differ in Lafayette, Boulder and other towns, so your contractor should pull the permit and include it in the quote.
How long does a kitchen remodel take? Plan on about 2 to 4 months from first meeting to finished kitchen. That covers design and choices, permit review, ordering cabinets (often the longest wait) and 4 to 8 weeks of construction.
3 ways to keep your kitchen on budget: set aside 10% to 15% for surprises, since older Boulder County homes almost always hide something; make every choice before demolition, because changes mid-project cost the most; and keep the layout if it works, since moving plumbing is where budgets grow fastest.
